wheatgrass powder

Namaste Superfoods’ Organic Wheatgrass Powder is produced from the leafy growth of the young wheat plant (Triticum aestivum). Our wheatgrass is sourced from an organic farm on the South Island of New Zealand and is harvested whilst it is still young. This gluten-free edible grass is either juiced into a “wheatgrass shot,” or milled down and dried into a fine green powder that’s used to create a multipurpose product for both humans and animals.

Wheatgrass has been used for 1000’s of years, in fact the ancient Egyptians used wheatgrass to detox and maintain their health and vitality. Only in the early Twentieth Century did we discover the exceptional nutritional richness of its young, leafy growth.

Health enthusiasts have long raved about the countless benefits of this plant, and for good reason. Often it’s consumed as a fresh juice, but it also comes in powdered form. Fresh wheatgrass juice is considered to be a living food. Nicknamed “liquid gold” one serving of wheatgrass juice is the rough equivalent of one and a half pounds of leafy green vegetables.

It can be used as an everyday health tonic and may even help treat specific diseases. More research is needed to truly determine its efficacy, but researchers agree that wheatgrass has potential.

So what’s in Wheatgrass that makes it so Beneficial?

Some experts claim that wheatgrass contains over 100 different elements needed by man. One of the most noticeable (and important) nutrients in wheatgrass is wheatgrass powder

Chlorophyll is the substance that gives wheatgrass its signature, bright green colour. The human body uses it for a number of important processes: It’s a natural liver cleanser and detoxifier, acts like an antioxidant to reduce free radical damage, is a blood strengthener (it has a similar chemical composition to that of haemoglobin,) and can help give you a boost in energy.  Science has proven that chlorophyll arrests growth and development of unfriendly bacteria.

Aside from chlorophyll wheatgrass is considered an excellent source of minerals, boasting a wealth of magnesium, calcium, copper and phosphorous content. Wheatgrass benefits also include being packed with amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), enzymes which are needed for digestion, and many vitamins and minerals which are needed for disease-free living.

Wheatgrass is rich in the following nutrients:

  • Chlorophyll
  • Antioxidants
  • Iron
  • Proteins
  • Electrolytes including magnesium and calcium
  • Amino Acids
  • Vitamins A, C, E, K, and B complex
  • Fibre

  • Enzymes
  • Phytonutrients

Some people even use wheatgrass for preventing grey hair, reducing high blood pressure, improving digestion, and lowering cholesterol by blocking its absorption. Other uses include treatment of respiratory tract complaints, including the common cold, cough, bronchitis, fever, and sore throat; tendency toward infection; gout; liver disorders; joint pain; preventing tooth decay and chronic skin problems.

Don’t underestimate wheatgrass – it’s very potent.

There is little risk from organic wheatgrass powder of causing any side effects for most people. Rarely people have experienced adverse reactions from wheatgrass including allergic reactions (which usually happen right away after consuming it), digestive discomfort, nausea, headaches, hives or swelling of the throat. Consuming too much at any given time can leave you feeling nauseous and sick. These symptoms typically fade within two weeks, or after your body has adjusted to the wheatgrass.

  • Wheatgrass should always be consumed on an empty stomach or with other fruits and vegetables, and not after a meal, otherwise it may make you feel nauseated.
